The towns of Durango, and Silverton are old gold and silver mining towns that grew up in the early 1880's. The Durango and Silverton Railraod was built to serve that industry, and those employed by it.
It is a narrow gage railroad and has operated since 1881. Riding the trains is now a huge tourist attraction. The ride from Durango to Silveton is 45 miles, and takes three and a half hours. The scenery is spectacular so riders are glad that train goes slowly. I highly recommend this experience.
